Florida Could Make Generic Drugs Cheap — But Politicians Are Choosing Profits Over People

2 min read

Why are generic drugs still so expensive in Florida? They’re supposed to be cheap, but far too many Floridians are paying way too much for medicine they need. The truth is, there’s a clear way to fix this — and our politicians are ignoring it.

Florida Already Has a Tool

The Florida Rx Card is a free discount card that anyone can use. With it, you can get:

  • Up to 80% off generic drugs

  • Around 30% off brand-name drugs

It’s simple: print the card, show it at the pharmacy, and the pharmacist applies the discount.

But here’s the problem: the savings aren’t guaranteed. Prices change from pharmacy to pharmacy, and not everyone gets the best deal. That means Floridians are still paying too much — even with the card.

How Florida Could Make Drugs Cheaper

Here’s the solution: Centralized Administration. That means The Sunshine state would run the Florida Rx program for every Floridian. Here’s what could happen:

  1. Negotiate Real Discounts

    • The state could bargain with pharmacies and pharmacy managers to make all generic drugs cheaper.

    • Speaking for millions of Floridians gives the Sunshine state real power to lower prices.

  2. Guarantee Low Prices Everywhere

    • Generic drugs could have a fixed, low price at every pharmacy, so no one gets ripped off.

  3. Make All Pharmacies Participate

    • From big chains to local mom-and-pop pharmacies, everyone would have to join. More competition means lower prices for you.

  4. Track Prices and Fix Problems Fast

    • The state could monitor which drugs are still too expensive and adjust discounts to make sure everyone benefits.

So Why Isn’t This Happening?

Even though this plan could save Florida families hundreds of dollars a year, politicians are standing in the way.

They are protecting big pharmacies and drug companies who profit from high prices, while ignoring the everyday Floridian who struggles to pay for medicine.

Instead of fighting for the people, they are putting profits and politics before your health.

The Bottom Line

Florida already has the tools to make generic drugs cheaper, but politicians aren’t using them. A stronger, Sunshine state-run program could:

  • Guarantee low prices on all generic drugs

  • Make it easy for every Floridian to get the medicine they need

  • Save families hundreds of dollars every year

It’s time for Florida leaders to stop protecting big business and start protecting you. Affordable medicine isn’t a privilege — it’s a right.

Call to Action

When elected, I will bring a bill to the House floor to create a Centralized Administration to run the Florida Rx Program and make prescription drugs cheaper for every Floridian. It’s time to put people before profits and finally give Floridians the medicine they need at a price they can afford.
